Slip-and-fall accidents can happen in some of the most unexpected places for people in Atlanta, from major public venues to a local shopping mall. In one case, magician David Copperfield and the Las Vegas hotel that hosted his performance are being sued due to an injury received by an audience participant in one of the illusions performed. A British tourist sued Copperfield after he says he slipped and fell backstage after being randomly selected to take part in an illusion.
In the trick, performed at the MGM Grand as part of a 2013 magic performance, Copperfield would make members of the audience seemingly disappear from a platform on stage, only for the participants to reappear behind the theater. The participants would take a route backstage to reach the new location of their appearance. A lawyer for the tourist said that the route was inherently dangerous and that the man was not warned that he could be injured if he took part in the magic show.
The man went through hallways and an outdoor location before re-entering the theater through a rear door. However, he fell to the floor before entering the location. He claims that he slipped due to an incline in the path and debris due to renovations taking place nearby. However, the hotel’s lawyer said that the man did have a slip-and-fall accident due to an obstacle but simply tripped while walking and that the path was not found to be obstructed when the magician himself walked it 10 minutes prior to the audience participants.
