What you should know about T-Bone accidents

On Behalf of | May 22, 2023 | Car Accidents |

T-bone accidents, also known as side-impact or broadside collisions, occur when the front end of one vehicle collides with the side of another vehicle, forming a “T” shape. They can be particularly devastating when the vehicles involved are significantly different in size.

To reduce the risk of T-bone accidents, drivers should always obey traffic signals, yield the right of way when required and remain attentive and focused on the road. Additionally, defensive driving techniques, such as anticipating the actions of other drivers and maintaining a safe speed can help to prevent these types of accidents.

What causes T-bone accidents?

These accidents typically happen at intersections or in parking lots where vehicles are traveling perpendicularly to each other. T-bone accidents can occur due to various factors, including:

  • Failure to Yield: This can happen when a driver runs a red light, fails to stop at a stop sign or misjudges the speed or distance of an oncoming vehicle.
  • Distracted Driving: Distractions such as texting, talking on the phone or interacting with in-vehicle technology can divert a driver’s attention from the road, leading to a failure to notice a red light or stop sign, increasing the risk of a T-bone collision.
  • Speeding: Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to stop in time and react to changing traffic conditions.

T-bone accidents can be highly dangerous due to the location of impact and the lack of structural protection on the sides of vehicles compared to the front and rear. The side impact can directly impact the driver or passenger, potentially causing severe injuries, including head trauma, spinal injuries, broken bones and internal organ damage. The risk of injury is further increased if the collision occurs at high speeds.

If you or a loved one has recently been injured as a result of a T-bone accident, do not hesitate to seek legal guidance. Depending on the nature of your family’s circumstances, you may be entitled to significant compensation.
